The Lotus Eaters

OK, I've made it so that registration is not required in order to post. Now anyone can make comments...

Here's an inspirational quote from James T. Kirk, from "This Side of Paradise":

"Maybe we weren't meant for Paradise. Maybe we were meant to fight our way through, struggle, claw our way up, scratch for every inch of the way. Maybe we can't stroll to the music of the lute--we must march to the sound of drums."

"The world was all before them, where to choose/ Their place of rest, and Providence their guide:/ They hand in hand with wand'ring steps and slow,/ Through Eden took their solitary way."

Milton
Paradise Lost

Or perhaps we have all that we'll ever need.

Yeah, but Khan referenced Paradise Lost in "Space Seed." He said, "Are you familiar with Milton, captain?" and Kirk simply answered "I understand." The reference was to "better to rule in hell than serve in heaven."

So, Kirk definitely relates to Satan (who, as Blake said, had all the best lines).

I take your post to be a reminder of the claims of Eden as opposed to those of conquest. Duly noted. I look at "This Side of Paradise" as a "text" (as they say in the humanities) that is open to multiple readings and reinscriptions.

Ugh. But seriously, there is sort of a question lurking at the bottom of all this. After all, Spock says it was the first time he'd ever felt happy...happiness seems to be what we must give up to attain the good life, in Kirk's view. That should certainly make us feel uneasy.

The problem with allowing anyone to make comments, of course, is that anyone can intrude into your little sphere and start wreaking havoc like posting totally unrelated comments, or not overtly disclosing his/her persona. Which causes me to ask--why does the computer know who I am already? I think google is becoming god. I guess something was going to eventually.
